Pretty Much Amazing: The Absolute Best Songs of 2009 (Half Way There)

  • Jonny · 5 months ago
Wow. This list is epic. I love that it includes the good pop songs of 2009 along with the prolific tunes of the year. Big props for this one.
  • The_Voice_of_Reason · 1 month ago
This is probably the worst list anyone could have assembled for this topic. Umm... how can these fifty songs be the best of the year if I haven't heard of ANY of them? Where's "I Gotta Feeling"? Where's "Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)"? Both of those songs were MUCH bigger than this no-name crap you're posting.
  • Sasha · 2 months ago
THIS SONG IS THE WORST LIST EVER...... CANT U GUYS PUT AT LEAST 1 DECENT SONG?
  • mariah · 2 months ago
    i hate this! :p
  • zfoss33 · 2 months ago
this is possibly the worst list of songs i have ever seen in my entire life these songs suck
  • nicetoknovvyou · 2 months ago
okay. decent list. hate that sufjan stevens song though.
  • Keso · 2 months ago
I'm 12 and what is this? No srsly, some people really need to take some chill-pills. Everybody DOESN'T have the same musical taste, so this list may only appeal to Luis and the ones who really find the music he posts amazing. Just because HE puts Sufjan Stevens' “You Are The Blood“ as #1 on the list of "The Absolute Best Songs of 2009" doesn't mean it's your #1 song. My favourite song so far must be Yes Giantess' "Tuff 'n Stuff" while We Were Promised Jetpacks' "Quiet Little Voices" comes in as a close #2. But my favourite discovery this year is Penguin Prison (thank you Neon Gold Records). But I'm still really impressed by Luis list and would put 90 % of the songs on my own top 50 list. So instead of trash talking each other or blurt of things like "stupd list", post your own list or say something positive about some of the songs - you surely can't dislike ALL of them? I just read through some of the hater comments and didn't like what I read. Some of you may listen to all of the bands/artists posted here, some may only listen to just a couple while they dislike the rest. We're all different, so share your opinions - but do it in a nice way!
  • sockey · 2 months ago
nearly every single one of these songs is shit and where is la roux? or pink or britney! the bastards that determin this top 10 songs are total shit headded idiots and they should have been shot at birth
  • Richard · 5 months ago
This list was too long. Ugh. What's wrong with just putting up a simple Top 5 or something?

Aside from that, I think your Top 20 are great. I'd take my Top 5 from there:
    My Girls
    Heads Will Roll
    Blood Bank
  • Name · 1 month ago
what do you mean ugh. this is a great list! if you want a top 5 go find it somewhere else there are plenty on the internet
  • Greg · 5 months ago
What's up with the Animal Collective lovefest? #1 and #5? That's a little overboard. I didn't think "Summertime Clothes" was that good of a song in the first place.

My top 3 songs of the year are:

Grizzly Bear "While You Wait For The Others"
    Animal Collective "My Girls
    Bon Iver - Blood Bank
  • Anonymous · 5 months ago
There needs to be some Little Boots up in here! "Remedy" is so good. Listen to it.
  • Peter · 3 months ago
I hate to sound elitist or even condescending but there's a clear trend among the comments. The people who question the quality of this list are either young or uneducated as evidence by their informal slang or poor spelling, whatever, etc. The bottom line is the people who compiled this list know more about music than the average pop music listening comment hater. Based on online and offline consensus, My Girls is revolutionary not just for 2009 but relative to songs that have come out in the past decade. Again, not to sound elitist, but as a Juilliard graduate, the song's chord progressions and structure are unlike anything we've ever heard. And that needs to be celebrated.

As evidence that this list is not partial towards indie music, check out the Beyonce and Black Eyed Peas selections. What people fail to realize is that the term "best songs" should imply innovation, progression and barrier breaking. While people may remember "Halo" or "Boom-boom pow" ten years from now because it was blasted on the radio or in the clubs, rather than the song that it's derived from, it's the "My girls" of the world that are going to make the most worthwhile impact on the music industry landscape...and that's what it's all about.

    Keep dreaming and innovating
  • Emsanity · 3 months ago
Well, sir Peter over here really knows his stuff.

Personally though, despite your righteous wording, I still have no love for "My Girls."
  • Anonymous · 4 months ago
good list of songs... i like the way you've included a few pop songs in an otherwise list of less commercial music it denies an ignorance to the fact that pop songs are often actuallt very good songs despite the lack of intelligence of the majority who listen to them.. ie most of the people who have written on this page saying they havent heard of the songs.... the list is called "the absolute best songs" people.. not "the best songs within your commercialised brain capacity"
  • on-a-boat · 3 months ago
i love it when someone with a brain comes in and leaves an intelligent comment lol
  • MLM · 3 months ago
    I concur.
    Anonymous, you rock.
  • Josh · 4 months ago
Well i think that this list has some really good music that i would not have found otherwise. Thanks heaps.
And to everyone who thinks the list is "shit" don't read it and get over yourselves.
  • Josh · 4 months ago
    P.S.
Thanks to people who have added more music in the comments, they have also been helpful :)
  • Jonathan Moldenhauer · 5 months ago
    Where is La Roux?

In For The Kill is good but I believe the real GEM to be "Cover My Eyes." Who has not had a time when they can not stand to see someone with someone else. That sour feeling you get in your stomach when you see this is brilliantly captured in the song.

    Where is Britney Spears?

"If You Seek Amy" may not be the smash hit it deserves to be, but it ever solidifies Britney's weird fetish underground following she seems to have with blogs and DJ's. Plus the princess of pop, now Queen of pop, has had quite the comeback.
  • Simon · 5 months ago
Marina And The Diamonds - I Am Not A Robot
Florence And The Machine - Cosmic Love
    Röyksopp - I Am Not A Robot

    My top 3.

    Moth's Wings.
  • Hmm.. · 5 months ago
Interesting Top 5 choices... double Animal Collective? that non-single Sufjan Stevens song? ... it's your list, i guess...
  • Eb · 5 months ago
The Killers - A Dustland Fairytale

You are seriously awesome for including that song. It's criminally underrated. Ignored, actually.
  • Anonymous · 5 months ago
Dirty Projectors - Stillness Is The Move
    Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks
    Passion Pit - Sleepy Head
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Heads Will Roll
    Animal Collective - My Girls
  • Anonymous · 5 months ago
    WHERE IS LA ROUX?!!!!!

La Roux- Bulletproof <-- my favorite song of the year.
  • dan · 1 month ago
are you kidding me? la roux? so many better choices, for example any kings of leon song or jay-z song is better than what i just heard
  • Jack · 5 months ago
Good list overall, but it's missing some key ingredients, I think.

    This is what it needs...
    Patrick Wolf - The bachelor
    The xx - Crystalised
    Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Runawayy
Bat for Lashes - Pearl’s dream

Maybe instead of "Boom Boom Pow" or 2 Lady GaGa songs, you could have added one of those ;)
  • Andy · 5 months ago
cool list, it's pretty varied. here are mine:

tommy sparks - shes got me dancing, tiga - shoes, phoenix - 1901, röyksopp - the girl and the robot...

and even more... such a good year!!
  • Jacob · 5 months ago
This list is Pretty Much Amazing, lol. It's just missing ONE song: “Two” - The Antlers. It's bloody brilliant! Download it NOW.

    Thank you.
  • Name · 2 months ago
    "Two" is #27!
  • Linda · 5 months ago
Nice list. I love Girl and The Robot!!

    Here are mine:
Royksopp - The Girl and the Robot
    Phoenix - Lisztomania (Classixx Remix)
    Annie - Antonio
Bat For Lashes - Daniel (Duke Dumont vs. Youth Attack! Remix)
Pony Pony Run Run - Hey You (Mondkopf Remix)
La Roux - In For The Kill
  • BJay · 5 months ago
Even though both Phoenix's "1901" and "Lisztomania" would've been in my Top 10, I still think this list is great!!
And of course... you had to put Beyoncé in there... lol.
  • Tyler · 5 months ago
    Come On!
    No Chiddy Bang!?
    Not even Kids Remix?
  • Luis Tovar · 5 months ago
Thank you for the comments everyone!

@Jonathan Moldenhauer - La Roux is absent from this list because the only single of hers I truly loved was Quicksand, and that was released in 2008. Once/If "Tigerlily" is released, then we'll talk ;) Re: Britney, "If U Seek Amy" was definitely catchy and likable, but hardly a candidate for this list. The novelty rubbed off rather quickly, in my opinion.

@Tyler - because of the "Single" rule I placed, Chiddy Bang doesn't qualify for this list. "Kids" would have easily been on this. Maybe once they release their mixtape...

@Anonymous #9 - YES! I'm just waiting for "Remedy" to be released - that song is great.
  • Eric · 5 months ago
Can't claim to be as on top of new music as I probably should be, but I'm noticing three pretty glaring omissions IMO:

    Metric - Gimme Sympathy
Silversun Pickups - The Royal We
    Crystal Method - Falling Hard
  • Eric · 5 months ago
Ahhh, "singles". Lame on my part.
  • Keso · 5 months ago
We Were Promised Jetpacks – Quiet Little Voices

I can't stop listening to that song, can listen to it for hours.
  • Sharkeen · 5 months ago
I'm dissapointed about you... That's my Top-50 singes of first half 2009: http://sharkeen.private.lt/2009/06/22/geriausio...

    Leading:
    1. 0909 Empire Of The Sun – Walking On A Dream 18
    2. 0894 White Lies – To Lose My Life 19
    3. 0852 La Roux – In For The Kill 19
    4. 0828 Franz Ferdinand – Ulysses 18
    5. 0765 La Roux – Quicksand 19
  • Anonymous · 5 months ago
    Nice top 5 picks!

First Communion and Mykonos are definitely from last year, unless I've mastered time travelling without knowing.

Oh, and if you listened to the entire BEP album, you'd like "Alive" more than "Boom Boom Pow."
  • Luis Tovar · 5 months ago
Thanks Anon #25! re: Mykonos and First Communion -- they were officially released as singles in 2009. That's the rule of this game, singles only :)
  • Luke · 5 months ago
I love Summertime Clothes. Definately deserves that #5 spot.
However, I never really liked My Girls... i don't think its as amazing as everyone seems to think...
  • Anonymous · 5 months ago
This is a really good list but BBU should have been way up there
  • Evan G · 5 months ago
i would totally say "New in town" by little boots but i can't stand the version that was released. i like when it was "leaked" or whatever, there seemed to be a lot less polish which was good in the situation.
  • Defunder · 5 months ago
    "The list is life."

Great songs. Sadly, I haven't had a chance to keep up with music this year, and I feel like this list is keeping me in the game!

If only I had a way of easily playing this playlist at my Float of July party this Saturday....
  • Luis Tovar · 5 months ago
Defunder, I feel your pain! But for the safety of the blog... I couldn't put up a 50-song .zip file, ya know?

The best you can do is sign up with Lala.com, "add" this songs to your Lala collection w/ your 50 credits (1 song = 1 credit) and you can play the songs from your laptop/computer at your party... or pay for each one, 89c.

    Good luck!
  • Neil · 5 months ago
I was going to write an article like this with maybe my top 10 songs of the year so far, but then last night you beat me to the punch with this top 50 list that includes every song I was considering.

So instead, I wrote a feature on some of the albums we're all anticipating in the SECOND half of 2009. Here's the article. It's been an astounding year for music so far, and there's a lot more to come.
  • Brandon @ TBE · 5 months ago
Oooh man, 50 songs and still FULL of holes. Here are the odd numbers from TBE's Best 20.9 Songs of 2009 So Far. (My rules were different so don't flip if my shit don't fully vibe.)

20.9 - Das Racist - Combination Pizza Hut And Taco Bell (Wallpaper. Remix)

    19 - The Sounds - Dorchester Hotel

    17 - N.A.S.A. - Gifted ft.Kanye, Santogold, & Lykke Li

15 - Wild Light - California On My Mind

13 - Simian Mobile Disco - Audacity Of Huge ft. Chris Keating

    11 - Harlem Shakes – Strictly Game

    9 - Passion Pit - Little Secrets

7 - The Maccabees - Love You Better

5 - Daniel Merriweather - Change ft. Wale

3 - Filthy Dukes – Nonsense In The Dark (Ft. Orlando Weeks)

1 - Bike For Three! - All There Is To Say About Love

    Check out the full list.

    Grizzly Bear wins 2009!

Best songs out there. MPP has grown tiresome to me sadly
    :(

Stillness is the move rules though! Nice to see that Gossip track get some love too, however, nobody should encourage people to listen to the black eyed peas, it's just irresponsible
  • Knatterjak · 5 months ago
would have put sex on fire on there- oh wait that was 2008 wasnt it
  • Anonymous · 5 months ago
the top 5 sucks. deal with it.
  • Bear · 5 months ago
    Eh. Okay list. But...

    1- Solange's "T.O.N.Y." was released in 2008.
2- As was Kanye West's "Paranoid."
3- N.A.S.A.'s "Gifted" was leaked late in 2008 too.
  • Bear · 5 months ago
Erm. Wait. Nevermind. I didn't read your qualifiers carefully enough to understand what you meant.
  • cureos · 5 months ago
I'm also a bit cool to the top 5, but as a whole, this is a great list! I would have pushed 'Daniel' and the incredible 'Moth's Wings' up a couple spots though and dropped in some Handsome Furs ('I'm Confused'). My top two non-singles so far this year are 'Help I'm Alive' and 'All We Want Baby Is Everything'.
  • John · 5 months ago
Nice list. I cannot find your tracks on the Hype Machine. It says that they don't follow you anymore. When will this be fixed?
  • azjpeg · 5 months ago
Mike Bones "What I Have Left" (and the quite beautiful b-side version of the same track by Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor)
    Chew Lips "Solo"

and if these were out as singles:
    Neon Indian "Deadbeat Summer"
    Nottee "Young Modern Life"
  • slap yo mammy · 5 months ago
If you measure "goodness" in singles, you are a moron. Not to mention your taste is repugnant. It's all about the albums. Have a lovely day.

the only thing else i would include is The Letter by The Veils

    passion pit - little secrets
    metric - help i'm alive

  • pmna · 5 months ago
    this list is fucking lame
no im not saying you should you should just put obscure bands...but like Green Day...Eminem? Those songs were just crap, what is this website offering? 21 guns? that sounds like an avril lavigne song

I'm disappointed not to see Britney Spears on this list.

"Circus," "If U Seek Amy," and "Radar" deserve to be on this list.

Ok so daylight didn't make the list.. wtf..
white rabbit - percussion gun didn't make the list.. wtf.

those 2 songs are at least in the top 10 so far. at least.

oh and how did 1901 fall below lisztomania. and why isn't 1901 in the top 15? a brief explanation would be nice.

that eminem song is a 5 out of 10 and the green day song is too simple. doesn't deserve mention.

you need to listen to all the songs us users are suggesting before making this your final list.

go listen to the two songs i mentioned and also..

    yeasayer - tightrope
noisettes ... theres several to choose from.
    coconut records - microphone

oh and do not put the metric song on the list. everyone of their old songs is better.

but pleease, i repeat, please put white rabbits - percussion gun in the top 10.... AT LEAST!
  • Luis Tovar · 5 months ago
thank you for your suggestions. this is the upside of doing these lists every quarter -- it gives me time to build up the list properly for the actual final list in late dec / early january.

and you're right, the absence of "Daylight" and "Percussion Gun" is completely and utterly wtf-worthy.

RE: 1901 v Lisztomania. The reason is simple. I like Lisztomania better. And to be honest, I wish 30 songs would fit into the Top 15 ;)
  • Elvis · 5 months ago
ps. bloc party one month off is from 2008
  • Elvis · 5 months ago
wow... how many lady gaga songs does it take to make a list lose all credibility.. none! because you also have britney spears on this list.

Nice list. thats all. im happy you put paparazzi higher than love game. Heavy cross should be a bit higher.
N.A.S.A.'s gifted is rightfully placed. its a shame that album bombed because nothing else was good.
  • asher · 5 months ago
    All together great list....
BUT i think you put a few songs on the list for the "mtv pop"crowd i.e black eyed peas/lady gaga/eminem...
Which i think is wrong...these songs don't come close to being in the top 50 and i think most reviewers would agree..
your website is 80% on the button most times when it comes to reviews and music...
ALL UP KEEP IT UP,I LOVE YOUR WORK!!

  • Sean · 4 months ago
All these people who think all these songs suck need to rethink the reason we have lists like this, so I can find new music! :D

Animal - Miike Snow is enough of a good song for me to think this list is totally worth it. I really like 1901 and raindrops as well. I don't quite know why you put Heads Will Roll on there instead of Hysteric which is by far (my favorite) song on the whole album.

It's too bad no one likes The Prodigy anymore cause they have some great songs on their new album Lost Beats like, Warriors Dance and Thunder. I suppose it's a more acquired taste.

Anyways I'm still going to go through every song on here, you did a great job!
  • Luis Tovar · 4 months ago
    Thank you Sean!

Oh and RE: "I don’t quite know why you put Heads Will Roll on there instead of Hysteric which is by far (my favorite) song on the whole album."

Hysteric, unfortunately, isn't a single. :( But yes, it is a great song. My personal favorite from that album is Dull Life or maybe Runaway.

"mykonos" was from 2008. early 2008 at that.

i'm tired of people saying this. lol

    HERE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mykonos_(song)
Released UK version January 27, 2009; US Version May 5, 2009
  • Ashlee · 4 months ago
Animal Collective's "My girls", is number one. (:
I'm so elated about that, so I can't really complain.
I thought maybe "1901" could have been lower, but then again I was happy with "Listzomania".
Oh, and I'm sure many people have also mentioned this... (so I feel bad for repeating it), but "Daylight" by Matt & Kim is missing.... (well maybe this is strictly my opinion, but I was disappointed when I didn't see it. )
I think you guys did pretty good, no list is perfection, and I agreed with a good amount of it.
Keep up the good work, and this might be a lot too ask but, I really hope you all put Imogen Heap in the next list.... I'm a huge fan and her new song is amazing.
  • Stomper90 · 4 months ago
If you are going to do Eminem why wouldnt you do crack a bottle?

How is Cudi/Kanye Poker Face that far down on the list? 1 Franz Ferdinand? how is Mike Snow that low? How did Carby by Discovery not make it?
where'e Cam'Ron i hate my job? No Chiddy Bang?
  • Holly · 4 months ago
Most of these songs are crap, like Welcome to Heartbreak, CRAP!!! But even though everyone has their own tastes, the "Absolute Best Songs of 2009" should be chosen by their overall populatiry status, not by one persons opinion. A song that stayed at number one on the charts, like Boom Boom Pow deserves to be high up, but Bloc Party doesn't need to be on here, and neither does Taylor Swift. Majority rules. Period.
  • Anonymous · 4 months ago
Holly, come on, you ought to know better than "majority rules. period." If that were the case, if the list were what "the majority" likes, then Miley Cyrus would be on here, you'd have no argument against Taylor Swift and Beyonce would be on here for "Put a Ring on it."
  • Luis Tovar · 4 months ago
lol, actually. "I" rule. since, well, I pay the hosting bills for this site.. heh :)

and anyone that knows me/reads this blog knows that the "absolute" part is a bad joke and exaggeration.

Maybe I should put it in italics. Hmmm...

  • Anonymous · 4 months ago
Nah, Luis. Leave it as it is. There is no pleasing the Holly's of the world. Anyone with even the smallest slice of intelligence understands that you are playing with the word "absolute." It takes a lot of work to post an informed list of this sort. Sensible people understand. The problem is that sensible people often fail to take the time to post their thoughts on blogs like this. They check it out, admire the work, then move on to the other things in their well-rounded lives. Just thought I'd be the exception and stop and say, "nice work!"

    This is my issue:
You say that If U Seek Amy was released in 2008, and Radar in 2007.
I agree that Circus was released in 2008 (as the 2nd single)
but the former two songs were released in 2009...IUSA in March and Radar in June
You cant say they were released before because Lady GaGa's album (The Fame) came out in 2008...therefore it shouldnt be on the list if britney's not on the list

I really appreciate this post. It's definitely a take away from the "mainstream" which I think is great. Regardless of whether or not people are "recognizable" or "popular" shouldn't be a weight that holds them down in relation to musical ability. These people "rock" in their own right. Thanks Luis Tovar for keeping things cool... *insert high five*

Okay first of all, just because you haven't heard of these artists or you don't like the music that is posted on here does not mean that the person posting these songs has bad taste in music. And if you people read before you go insulting this person, this blog is the best songs in his/her OPINION.
  • c · 3 months ago
Its funny that most people ask "who are these people" It is ridiculous how most people do not listen to music and they just go by what they read on the tabloids or they listen to somebody because they are on MTV. People please listen to the music.
It is a good list, couple of songs that should not have been listed but, it is all about personal preferences.

For all people who said this list sucks, i would suggest to take time to listen some tracks here. Its a very good mix between mainstream and "indie" music.

A big massive YES to Moth's Wings being in the top ten. I've thought for quite a while this would be their hit, and the song that get's them from unknown synth band #53567 and into the public consciousness. It's brilliant and made for TV montages of summery things.

First off, I would like to commend the author of this article. Your taste in music is far beyond that of an average consumer of pop culture. I admire your sense of balance in the wonderful world that is music. It appears to me you know no boundaries when it comes to your interests, and why should you? I can personally say I have come to love this blog and have welcomed it as a new way to discover music that pertains to me, not to say I agree with every song or comment posted.

Furthermore, as it goes without saying, the incoherent babbling of the aforementioned "average consumer of pop culture" has inspired me to leave a comment in the first place because, it would seem to me their interest lies in criticizing that which does not meet their like-minded swarm of thick-skulled counterparts. I asked myself, "Why? Why would someone be so hateful and eager to put down artists they have never even picked up?" In a world of high-speed-information-available-at-a-computer-near-you setting, there is no reason for pressing the "play" button and exposing yourself to something new and exciting, rather than listening to a $1.29 song that iTunes' Genius recommended to you even though it loops the same repeating bass and tempo (just like the other 400+ in your awfully boring and distasteful selection that you call a library).

Any talented, or otherwise, artist reading: keep making beautiful music. Just remember some of us are still listening.
  • Ivan · 3 months ago
Luis, don't mind the haters, it's probably some kid who thinks that good songs only appear on billboard and mtv charts.

If internet had taught me anything for the past few years it's that are a lot of great musicians who may not be widely known but make some great music if not better than their famous counterparts.

    I don't know what I'm writing, it's 2:30 AM over here.

p.s. i love that you joined tumlr and hope that song of the day posts become a regular thing

    bye

I think the point that most critics of this list are making is that it is strongly commercial. It even seems as though it may be sponsored by a number of online sites like la la etc. So when the claim the best songs of 2009 is made we have to put that in context. I like some of these songs.Let's just remember that there is a lot of good indie music. Different perspectives are good and people should question commercialism in general. Art is not about commodification.

Hey Juilliard grad, no one cares where you went to school. Music is an art, and a lot of people do not put "Best songs" to imply what you are saying. People who go to school to "learn" art are silly, and btw... It was decided a while back that there is an entirely different language used on the internet and via text than is actually spoken. Oh yeah, and not everyone can type as well as everyone else snob. Plus, to all of the youngsters out there, don't let ANYONE look down on you because you are young! You are the future, and you can like and respect whatever you like, and there's nothing wrong with that. Lady GaGa, Cursive, The Sounds of Animals Fighting, Britney Spears, SPM, or anything else, if it inspires or speaks to you, then effing embrace it.
  • Peter · 2 months ago
First, don't be intimidated by my writing. The fact that you commented on it shows that you feel threatened..don't be. I've never won any awards for writing and the people who (see should be whom but I wrote who to dumb it down) I associate myself with write and speak the same way. If you want to call us over-achievers that's fine with me. Don't knock someone for being a certain way especially if it's something that people should strive for (i.e. hard work, strong education).

Second, if you check out any best songs of 2009 compilation, you will see a list that closely mirrors this one. And the reason? check out my previous post. You're just bitter because you don't get some of the songs on this list. Is it my fault that you can't break down music as well as I can? Absolutely not. Because they sound like shit to you and I'm defending them and because I supposedly write fancy and was somewhat judgmental, you feel the need to rebel.

WOW 2009's been good to us, lts awesome how a list can bring so much clarity
    umm a couple of things
    - good list all around, quite well rounded, touches on every genre pretty much, though top 5 does air on the side of pretentious hipster if you ask me, but its probably just me.
    - its nice to see that you've patched up some of the holes that were in your list the first time around, its nice to see you've included some readers input
    - honestly So Insane over Orange Shirt or Osaka Loop Line
    - These two singles should be up there
Friendly Fires - Kiss of Life
    Delorean - Deli
    - You surprise me yet again no Florence, Dizzee, or Cudi?
  • shmeksi86 · 2 months ago
Luis thanks for taking my advice on the Animal Collective and My girls. As I told you on twitter it's no.1 on everybody's list and that's kind of boring. Great choice with You are the blood.

I think that at least one Miike Snow needs to be in the top 50. I know that you are kind of annoyed about their songs being too much used on GG, but they deserve to be in the top 50. Same goes for Royksopp and Metric (Gold guns girls) :D

If I may add a couple of songs that could get on the list, I don't know if you forgot them or you think that they are not list-worthy.

Florence and the machine - Rabbit heart
    Patrick Wolf - Bachelor
Make the girl dance - Baby, baby, baby
Kid Cudi - Heart of a lion (you put him in the tags, but nowhere on the list)
Dan Black - Anything from him, he's great
J*Davey - Sloooow (if you haven't heard of them you must listen to their stuff, it's great)

I'll stop here. It's always hard making this kind of lists because you first need to choose 50, 75, 100 songs for the list and then you need to arrange them. It's a tough job, but you did it .:-)
  • Keso · 2 months ago
I really hope that you're kidding about Make The Girl Dance? Have you ever listened to the lyrics (or at least read a translation)?
Patrick Wolf's "Bachelor" hasn't been released as a single or in a EP, so it does not fit on this list. And I haven't seen to much attention around it either...
About your choice of Kid Cudi's track, again, it's not a single. But yes, it was quite the buzz around it but really, isn't "Pursuit of Happiness" a step higher? I would really put that track in my top 50 list. One of my favourite albums this year.
Cant say anything of Dan Black, he's GOOD. The Passion Pit remix of Symphonies <3
Never heard of J*Davey, will look them up :)

I love the number 1. I've listened to it SOOOOOOO many times and just because I remembered it now, it's gonna get stuck in my head again :D
  • shmeksi86 · 2 months ago
Baby, baby, baby is a mega hit in clubs. It's french and the song is great to dance to I don't think that a club song in french needs to relly on the lyrics. Sometimes you just need to enjoy the song no matter what it's really saying (Jizz in my pants, I'm on a boat, funny songs that are awesome for just some plain fun).

As far as Patrick and Cudi are concerned there is that 4th limitation that lets a song be put on a list, so I went with that :D Pursuit of happiness is a great song, but I think that Heart of a lion gets overlooked because it doesn't have MGMT and Ratatat in the title ;-)

J Davey are kind of mix between Janelle Monae, The Knux and Noisettes. I don't think I ever heard any bad song from them. Listen to Mr Mister from them it's not 2009, but it's great. :D

Did I misread. I thought it said best. AC does not have #1 and #5. Also no La Roux? No Classixx? I can go on, but I will just raise my anger level. Once again a list fit for pitchfork, dominated by one type of music/
  • Pretty Much Amazing: Luis · 2 months ago
I'm kind of confused by your comment. AC isn't #1 and #5 on this list... also, La Roux is on this list. And what non-remix Classixx single do you suggest be on the top 50... lol.

It pained me to leave out artists like Florence and the Machine, fun., Japandroids, Kid Cudi and jj.. I don't think Classixx will make the cut before those ;)

wow i gotta say i haven't heard many of these before but by god they're fantastic. thanks

Passion Pit's Moth's Wings and Little Secrets are on here, but what about Sleepyhead? Sleepyhead is the best song from Manners. I'm surprised you changed the #1 spot, your half-way list suggested that My Girls is the greatest thing since sliced bread
  • Pretty Much Amazing: Luis · 2 months ago
I would have put sleepyhead on this, but the single was released in late
2008, disqualifying it from my list :(
  • charliegrimes · 2 months ago
These probably don't qualify, but in my top 50 list with no rules or stipulations:

Empire of the Sun - Half Mast (song of the year. incredible)
    fun. - The Gambler
The Antlers - Bear (great choice!!)
Miles Fisher - This must be the place
Dorrough - Ice Cream Paint Job

    how's that for diversity!?

    Nice list.
I do think 'Bicycle' by the Memory Tapes is a glaring omission though.

To all the stupid kids who have no idea who these bands/artists are you need to off yourselves because what you're currently listening to is probably hot poo on a stick.

Great list Luis, personally i would have had While You Wait For The Others as my number one. Useful Chamber by DP second (the last minute is probably the best piece of music made all year IMO) and Bear third.

seriously great list...but you're missing a lot of great artists that put out some great singles this year...such as The Avett Brothers, Neko Case, Andrew Bird, Gomez, & Beirut

audacity of huge was SMD's worst song in my opinion, ambulance is the best on the album as far as I'm concerned.

my favorite of the year is "lisztomania" followed closely by edward sharpe's "home" and "blood bank" in numero three

no this list really is shit. its like under the radar and spin magazines dribble repackaged. more trend than music once again. but whatever its still really hip right?

Really diggin that Pictureplane song. damn
  • Jellie Dawn · 2 months ago
Was hoping for Heavy Cross to be higher in the list, but other than that, this list is great. Must've been toilsome to sift through numerous notable tracks... Any new pmaCASTs for october? And I have to agree with Number 1, Surfjan Steven's You Are The Blood from Dark was the night was awesome, theatrical even... A++!

Your top 5 are great but where is Phoenix-Rome on this list?

    Such a great song.

    Very good list though.
  • Treeoflife222 · 2 months ago
Cannot believe Phoenix- Rome isnt on here.

    Otherwise good list.

A lot of people are making subjective complaints. I have an objective one.

Fleet Foxes (#12, #28) released their S/T album in 2008.
Gang Gang Dance (#15) released Saint Dymphna in 2008.
And Gotye's "Learnalilgivinanlovin", while it was rereleased by Neon Gold this year, was first released as a single and on an album in 2006.

So those really shouldn't be on your list, even though they're good songs.
  • Pretty Much Amazing: Luis · 1 month ago
gws, this a singles list and those two fleet foxes songs, and the gang gang
dance song were released as singles, physically, in 2009.

Also, I'm going by US release dates for the most part, so Gotye is still
    very much eligible. :)

    Luis,

I really like this list. It seems like as the year has moved on and the list has been edited, you've shied away from some of the more mainstream choices and included some very important, if less popular songs of 2009. Of course, as an AnCo fan, I'm sad to see My girls drop down a spot on the list and heartbroken to see Summertime Clothes fall all the way to #10, but that's probably just because I've never really gotten Sufjan.

PMA straddles the pop and alt worlds, and that is both its greatest strength and weakness. My personal loathing for Lady Gaga means that I get frustrated when you post about her. But at the same time, it's clear that there isn't a lot of pretension here. I mean, you picked songs from 808's and The Fame so elitism is clearly not in play, and that's refreshing.

Anyway, Thanks for the list. AWESOME to see Wallpaper/Das Racist get a shoutout.

Some things you might consider before bringing 2k9 to a close:
When They Fight, They Fight - The Generationals
    11th Dimension - Julian Casablancas
    Vampire Weekend - Horchata
    Lover's Carvings - Bibio
Ain't No Rest For The Wicked - Cage The Elephant
    Swim - Surfer Blood
Awesome - Bloody Beetroots/The Cool Kids
    Fjinn Bikkjen - Casiokids
    Alive - Kid Cudi/Ratatat
not TOTALLY sure about your rules for release dates... they're kinda confusing, bull all these ones have 2009 as the year in my iTunes, so double check em, of course.
