Aside from that, I think your Top 20 are great. I'd take my Top 5 from there:
My Girls
Heads Will Roll
Blood Bank
My top 3 songs of the year are:
Grizzly Bear "While You Wait For The Others"
Animal Collective "My Girls
Bon Iver - Blood Bank
As evidence that this list is not partial towards indie music, check out the Beyonce and Black Eyed Peas selections. What people fail to realize is that the term "best songs" should imply innovation, progression and barrier breaking. While people may remember "Halo" or "Boom-boom pow" ten years from now because it was blasted on the radio or in the clubs, rather than the song that it's derived from, it's the "My girls" of the world that are going to make the most worthwhile impact on the music industry landscape...and that's what it's all about.
Keep dreaming and innovating
Personally though, despite your righteous wording, I still have no love for "My Girls."
Anonymous, you rock.
And to everyone who thinks the list is "shit" don't read it and get over yourselves.
Thanks to people who have added more music in the comments, they have also been helpful :)
In For The Kill is good but I believe the real GEM to be "Cover My Eyes." Who has not had a time when they can not stand to see someone with someone else. That sour feeling you get in your stomach when you see this is brilliantly captured in the song.
Where is Britney Spears?
"If You Seek Amy" may not be the smash hit it deserves to be, but it ever solidifies Britney's weird fetish underground following she seems to have with blogs and DJ's. Plus the princess of pop, now Queen of pop, has had quite the comeback.
Florence And The Machine - Cosmic Love
Röyksopp - I Am Not A Robot
My top 3.

omg. this shit is massive/////////////////////////
Stillness Is The Move
Moth's Wings.
You are seriously awesome for including that song. It's criminally underrated. Ignored, actually.
Grizzly Bear - Two Weeks
Passion Pit - Sleepy Head
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Heads Will Roll
Animal Collective - My Girls
La Roux- Bulletproof <-- my favorite song of the year.
This is what it needs...
Patrick Wolf - The bachelor
The xx - Crystalised
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Runawayy
Bat for Lashes - Pearl’s dream
Maybe instead of "Boom Boom Pow" or 2 Lady GaGa songs, you could have added one of those ;)
tommy sparks - shes got me dancing, tiga - shoes, phoenix - 1901, röyksopp - the girl and the robot...
and even more... such a good year!!
Thank you.
Here are mine:
Royksopp - The Girl and the Robot
Phoenix - Lisztomania (Classixx Remix)
Annie - Antonio
Bat For Lashes - Daniel (Duke Dumont vs. Youth Attack! Remix)
Pony Pony Run Run - Hey You (Mondkopf Remix)
La Roux - In For The Kill
And of course... you had to put Beyoncé in there... lol.
No Chiddy Bang!?
Not even Kids Remix?
@Jonathan Moldenhauer - La Roux is absent from this list because the only single of hers I truly loved was Quicksand, and that was released in 2008. Once/If "Tigerlily" is released, then we'll talk ;) Re: Britney, "If U Seek Amy" was definitely catchy and likable, but hardly a candidate for this list. The novelty rubbed off rather quickly, in my opinion.
@Tyler - because of the "Single" rule I placed, Chiddy Bang doesn't qualify for this list. "Kids" would have easily been on this. Maybe once they release their mixtape...
@Anonymous #9 - YES! I'm just waiting for "Remedy" to be released - that song is great.
Metric - Gimme Sympathy
Silversun Pickups - The Royal We
Crystal Method - Falling Hard
I can't stop listening to that song, can listen to it for hours.
Leading:
1. 0909 Empire Of The Sun – Walking On A Dream 18
2. 0894 White Lies – To Lose My Life 19
3. 0852 La Roux – In For The Kill 19
4. 0828 Franz Ferdinand – Ulysses 18
5. 0765 La Roux – Quicksand 19
First Communion and Mykonos are definitely from last year, unless I've mastered time travelling without knowing.
Oh, and if you listened to the entire BEP album, you'd like "Alive" more than "Boom Boom Pow."
However, I never really liked My Girls... i don't think its as amazing as everyone seems to think...
Great songs. Sadly, I haven't had a chance to keep up with music this year, and I feel like this list is keeping me in the game!
If only I had a way of easily playing this playlist at my Float of July party this Saturday....
The best you can do is sign up with Lala.com, "add" this songs to your Lala collection w/ your 50 credits (1 song = 1 credit) and you can play the songs from your laptop/computer at your party... or pay for each one, 89c.
Good luck!
So instead, I wrote a feature on some of the albums we're all anticipating in the SECOND half of 2009. Here's the article. It's been an astounding year for music so far, and there's a lot more to come.
20.9 - Das Racist - Combination Pizza Hut And Taco Bell (Wallpaper. Remix)
19 - The Sounds - Dorchester Hotel
17 - N.A.S.A. - Gifted ft.Kanye, Santogold, & Lykke Li
15 - Wild Light - California On My Mind
13 - Simian Mobile Disco - Audacity Of Huge ft. Chris Keating
11 - Harlem Shakes – Strictly Game
9 - Passion Pit - Little Secrets
7 - The Maccabees - Love You Better
5 - Daniel Merriweather - Change ft. Wale
3 - Filthy Dukes – Nonsense In The Dark (Ft. Orlando Weeks)
1 - Bike For Three! - All There Is To Say About Love
Check out the full list.
Best songs out there. MPP has grown tiresome to me sadly
:(
Stillness is the move rules though! Nice to see that Gossip track get some love too, however, nobody should encourage people to listen to the black eyed peas, it's just irresponsible
1- Solange's "T.O.N.Y." was released in 2008.
2- As was Kanye West's "Paranoid."
3- N.A.S.A.'s "Gifted" was leaked late in 2008 too.
Chew Lips "Solo"
and if these were out as singles:
Neon Indian "Deadbeat Summer"
Nottee "Young Modern Life"
the only thing else i would include is The Letter by The Veils
Pitchfork review of the album here

if u sign up on it and keep u online more than 20mins u will find many hot pic ladies say hello to u .
BLACK EYED PEAS? OH GOD.
basement jaxx - raindrops
passion pit - little secrets
metric - help i'm alive
thanks for putting that up otherwise i wouldnt have found out the metric song. THANKsss Uber Mucho! haha! B)
no im not saying you should you should just put obscure bands...but like Green Day...Eminem? Those songs were just crap, what is this website offering? 21 guns? that sounds like an avril lavigne song
PMA has been such a great fan of hers.
"Circus," "If U Seek Amy," and "Radar" deserve to be on this list.
white rabbit - percussion gun didn't make the list.. wtf.
those 2 songs are at least in the top 10 so far. at least.
oh and how did 1901 fall below lisztomania. and why isn't 1901 in the top 15? a brief explanation would be nice.
that eminem song is a 5 out of 10 and the green day song is too simple. doesn't deserve mention.
you need to listen to all the songs us users are suggesting before making this your final list.
go listen to the two songs i mentioned and also..
yeasayer - tightrope
noisettes ... theres several to choose from.
coconut records - microphone
oh and do not put the metric song on the list. everyone of their old songs is better.
but pleease, i repeat, please put white rabbits - percussion gun in the top 10.... AT LEAST!
and you're right, the absence of "Daylight" and "Percussion Gun" is completely and utterly wtf-worthy.
RE: 1901 v Lisztomania. The reason is simple. I like Lisztomania better. And to be honest, I wish 30 songs would fit into the Top 15 ;)
wheres matt and kim - daylight? are you on crack
Awful...
Nice list. thats all. im happy you put paparazzi higher than love game. Heavy cross should be a bit higher.
N.A.S.A.'s gifted is rightfully placed. its a shame that album bombed because nothing else was good.
BUT i think you put a few songs on the list for the "mtv pop"crowd i.e black eyed peas/lady gaga/eminem...
Which i think is wrong...these songs don't come close to being in the top 50 and i think most reviewers would agree..
your website is 80% on the button most times when it comes to reviews and music...
ALL UP KEEP IT UP,I LOVE YOUR WORK!!
P.S thanks for the new music, without this list i would'nt of found some great new artists/music...much appreciated!
anyway if you want my approval please change your links to zshare.
Animal - Miike Snow is enough of a good song for me to think this list is totally worth it. I really like 1901 and raindrops as well. I don't quite know why you put Heads Will Roll on there instead of Hysteric which is by far (my favorite) song on the whole album.
It's too bad no one likes The Prodigy anymore cause they have some great songs on their new album Lost Beats like, Warriors Dance and Thunder. I suppose it's a more acquired taste.
Anyways I'm still going to go through every song on here, you did a great job!
Oh and RE: "I don’t quite know why you put Heads Will Roll on there instead of Hysteric which is by far (my favorite) song on the whole album."
Hysteric, unfortunately, isn't a single. :( But yes, it is a great song. My personal favorite from that album is Dull Life or maybe Runaway.
So, this is awesome. Christmas come early.
here's my take on the year so far:
http://blog.jeffreygeoffrey.com/2009/07/top-son...
HERE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mykonos_(song)
I'm so elated about that, so I can't really complain.
I thought maybe "1901" could have been lower, but then again I was happy with "Listzomania".
Oh, and I'm sure many people have also mentioned this... (so I feel bad for repeating it), but "Daylight" by Matt & Kim is missing.... (well maybe this is strictly my opinion, but I was disappointed when I didn't see it. )
I think you guys did pretty good, no list is perfection, and I agreed with a good amount of it.
Keep up the good work, and this might be a lot too ask but, I really hope you all put Imogen Heap in the next list.... I'm a huge fan and her new song is amazing.
How is Cudi/Kanye Poker Face that far down on the list? 1 Franz Ferdinand? how is Mike Snow that low? How did Carby by Discovery not make it?
where'e Cam'Ron i hate my job? No Chiddy Bang?
and anyone that knows me/reads this blog knows that the "absolute" part is a bad joke and exaggeration.
Maybe I should put it in italics. Hmmm...
hehe
somehow i had missed dragonette but thanks to this list i've found a gem.
do agree with those calling for daylight but that aside, great work!
that shit was fucking garbage
You say that If U Seek Amy was released in 2008, and Radar in 2007.
I agree that Circus was released in 2008 (as the 2nd single)
but the former two songs were released in 2009...IUSA in March and Radar in June
You cant say they were released before because Lady GaGa's album (The Fame) came out in 2008...therefore it shouldnt be on the list if britney's not on the list

Every Body GO TO SHIT!!!
Becuse this songs sucks!!!
LOL
Where did you guys come up with this shit?
It is a good list, couple of songs that should not have been listed but, it is all about personal preferences.
For all people who said this list sucks, i would suggest to take time to listen some tracks here. Its a very good mix between mainstream and "indie" music.
I dont know why but i liked more the bottom songs in the ranking. Probably because Im not so much into Grizzly Bear kinda music.
Great site!
Furthermore, as it goes without saying, the incoherent babbling of the aforementioned "average consumer of pop culture" has inspired me to leave a comment in the first place because, it would seem to me their interest lies in criticizing that which does not meet their like-minded swarm of thick-skulled counterparts. I asked myself, "Why? Why would someone be so hateful and eager to put down artists they have never even picked up?" In a world of high-speed-information-available-at-a-computer-near-you setting, there is no reason for pressing the "play" button and exposing yourself to something new and exciting, rather than listening to a $1.29 song that iTunes' Genius recommended to you even though it loops the same repeating bass and tempo (just like the other 400+ in your awfully boring and distasteful selection that you call a library).
Any talented, or otherwise, artist reading: keep making beautiful music. Just remember some of us are still listening.
If internet had taught me anything for the past few years it's that are a lot of great musicians who may not be widely known but make some great music if not better than their famous counterparts.
I don't know what I'm writing, it's 2:30 AM over here.
p.s. i love that you joined tumlr and hope that song of the day posts become a regular thing
bye
who the fuck are these idiots that make this shit ??
these songs were boring and idiotic
thanks for wasting my life
let me just make a couple suggestion from my own list : portugal the man - people say, the invisible - london girl, andrew bird - anonanimal
cant wait for the end of the year compilations
Woah!
You guys need to watch your fucking language jeeeeeeeeeeeez
worst songs ever
go fuck yourself pussy, and next time read the persons fucking post fag.
settle down
if they dont like the list u cant make them like it
take a chill pill u physco
A couple more month to the years list, looking forward to it.
Keep up the good work !
Second, if you check out any best songs of 2009 compilation, you will see a list that closely mirrors this one. And the reason? check out my previous post. You're just bitter because you don't get some of the songs on this list. Is it my fault that you can't break down music as well as I can? Absolutely not. Because they sound like shit to you and I'm defending them and because I supposedly write fancy and was somewhat judgmental, you feel the need to rebel.
-Juilliard Grad
You have a few bands I didn't know and I'll check them out! I love discovering new bands everyday.
umm a couple of things
- good list all around, quite well rounded, touches on every genre pretty much, though top 5 does air on the side of pretentious hipster if you ask me, but its probably just me.
- its nice to see that you've patched up some of the holes that were in your list the first time around, its nice to see you've included some readers input
- honestly So Insane over Orange Shirt or Osaka Loop Line
- These two singles should be up there
Friendly Fires - Kiss of Life
Delorean - Deli
- You surprise me yet again no Florence, Dizzee, or Cudi?
I think that at least one Miike Snow needs to be in the top 50. I know that you are kind of annoyed about their songs being too much used on GG, but they deserve to be in the top 50. Same goes for Royksopp and Metric (Gold guns girls) :D
If I may add a couple of songs that could get on the list, I don't know if you forgot them or you think that they are not list-worthy.
Florence and the machine - Rabbit heart
Patrick Wolf - Bachelor
Make the girl dance - Baby, baby, baby
Kid Cudi - Heart of a lion (you put him in the tags, but nowhere on the list)
Dan Black - Anything from him, he's great
J*Davey - Sloooow (if you haven't heard of them you must listen to their stuff, it's great)
I'll stop here. It's always hard making this kind of lists because you first need to choose 50, 75, 100 songs for the list and then you need to arrange them. It's a tough job, but you did it .:-)
Patrick Wolf's "Bachelor" hasn't been released as a single or in a EP, so it does not fit on this list. And I haven't seen to much attention around it either...
About your choice of Kid Cudi's track, again, it's not a single. But yes, it was quite the buzz around it but really, isn't "Pursuit of Happiness" a step higher? I would really put that track in my top 50 list. One of my favourite albums this year.
Cant say anything of Dan Black, he's GOOD. The Passion Pit remix of Symphonies <3
Never heard of J*Davey, will look them up :)
I love the number 1. I've listened to it SOOOOOOO many times and just because I remembered it now, it's gonna get stuck in my head again :D
As far as Patrick and Cudi are concerned there is that 4th limitation that lets a song be put on a list, so I went with that :D Pursuit of happiness is a great song, but I think that Heart of a lion gets overlooked because it doesn't have MGMT and Ratatat in the title ;-)
J Davey are kind of mix between Janelle Monae, The Knux and Noisettes. I don't think I ever heard any bad song from them. Listen to Mr Mister from them it's not 2009, but it's great. :D
and
the xx - crystallized
also, the decemberist's rake song should def be in the top 50.. honorable mention my butt.
Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Heads Will Roll, Zero, Hysteric
Peter Bjorn and John - Nothing To Worry About
Jay-Z – Empire State of Mind (ft. Alicia Keys)
Noisettes - Never Forget You, Every Now And Then, Atticus
White Rabbit - Percussion Gun
Decemberists - The Rake's Song
Matt&Kim - Daylight
Gossip - Heavy Cross
Maxwell - Pretty Wings
Washed Out - Feel It All Around
Kings of Leon - Closer
Bat For Lashes - Daniel
Kid Cudi - Pursuit Of Happiness (ft. MGMT & Ratatat)
Arctic Monkeys - Secret Door
It pained me to leave out artists like Florence and the Machine, fun., Japandroids, Kid Cudi and jj.. I don't think Classixx will make the cut before those ;)
2008, disqualifying it from my list :(
Empire of the Sun - Half Mast (song of the year. incredible)
fun. - The Gambler
The Antlers - Bear (great choice!!)
Miles Fisher - This must be the place
Dorrough - Ice Cream Paint Job
how's that for diversity!?
I do think 'Bicycle' by the Memory Tapes is a glaring omission though.
Great list Luis, personally i would have had While You Wait For The Others as my number one. Useful Chamber by DP second (the last minute is probably the best piece of music made all year IMO) and Bear third.
WHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
WHHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
WHHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY???
Such a great song.
Very good list though.
Otherwise good list.
Fleet Foxes (#12, #28) released their S/T album in 2008.
Gang Gang Dance (#15) released Saint Dymphna in 2008.
And Gotye's "Learnalilgivinanlovin", while it was rereleased by Neon Gold this year, was first released as a single and on an album in 2006.
So those really shouldn't be on your list, even though they're good songs.
dance song were released as singles, physically, in 2009.
Also, I'm going by US release dates for the most part, so Gotye is still
very much eligible. :)
I really like this list. It seems like as the year has moved on and the list has been edited, you've shied away from some of the more mainstream choices and included some very important, if less popular songs of 2009. Of course, as an AnCo fan, I'm sad to see My girls drop down a spot on the list and heartbroken to see Summertime Clothes fall all the way to #10, but that's probably just because I've never really gotten Sufjan.
PMA straddles the pop and alt worlds, and that is both its greatest strength and weakness. My personal loathing for Lady Gaga means that I get frustrated when you post about her. But at the same time, it's clear that there isn't a lot of pretension here. I mean, you picked songs from 808's and The Fame so elitism is clearly not in play, and that's refreshing.
Anyway, Thanks for the list. AWESOME to see Wallpaper/Das Racist get a shoutout.
Some things you might consider before bringing 2k9 to a close:
When They Fight, They Fight - The Generationals
11th Dimension - Julian Casablancas
Vampire Weekend - Horchata
Lover's Carvings - Bibio
Ain't No Rest For The Wicked - Cage The Elephant
Swim - Surfer Blood
Awesome - Bloody Beetroots/The Cool Kids
Fjinn Bikkjen - Casiokids
Alive - Kid Cudi/Ratatat
not TOTALLY sure about your rules for release dates... they're kinda confusing, bull all these ones have 2009 as the year in my iTunes, so double check em, of course.
